Chronicles of Narnia

This probably my latest craze. I loved the movie and I urged those who have not watched it to catch it quick. Maybe it's the little girl in me (hmm..maybe thats why I also love Hello Kitty?) but I simply loved stories about witches....magic...fantasy.

I have just completed the 1st book of the Narnia series - "The Magician's Nephew". (CS Lewis
wrote this book last, chronologically) This book depicts the earlier days..how the wardrobe came about...how Jadis the Witch came to Narnia, how Nardia was created and the first travellers to Narnia. In essence, as CS Lewis wrote this book last, he was able to tie up all the loose ends together. All our queries and questions can be found in this book

When I first started on the book, it was pretty dreadful to read. The language is not difficult to read or to understand but the style of writing is very old-fashioned. (Could not pin-point what was the problem at first till I was talking to my sister who said she is boycotting the book as she found it boring to read and that the style of writing is very dated). Many have commented that CS Lewis' style is like JRR Tolkein trying to write like Enid Blyton...after reading this book, I can't help but to agree. The vocabulary used and the plot within the stories are simple as it was written meant for children as well.

The only thing which entralled me was the strong biblical references which CS Lewis embedded in his characters and stories. Aslan is referred to as God, while the Witch being likened to be the serpent in the Garden of Eden tempting Digory to eat the apple in order to save his mother from a terminal illness.

All in all, I wouldn't recommend that you read this book first as the story is not as interesting as all of his other books in this series. You probably wouldn't enjoy Narnia as much...take it from me...watch the movie first then read this book...
